Everything about Dental Implants

Dental Implants are artificial teeth roots that replace damaged or missing teeth with metal posts and crowns that look and function similar to the natural ones. Dental implants provide a permanent solution for your missing teeth. Since they are fixed to your jaw bone, they provide an excellent fit, do not slip while eating or speaking and prevent your jaw bone damage. Replacement of teeth with dental implants significantly improves the quality of your life and health

When can Dental Implants be used?

They can be used if:
If you have missing teeth and want a permanent and long-lasting solution to them.
You have a fully grown jawbone to secure the implants.
You are overall healthy and free of medical conditions like diabetes, osteoporosis, etc.

What are the types of dental implants for tooth replacement?

You may be having a single missing tooth or multiple missing teeth. They may be missing only in the upper or lower arches or maybe in both upper or lower arches.
Based on the number and pattern of missing teeth, the types of dental implants can be:
Single dental implants for replacing a single tooth: They are individual implants with one post and a crown. They are a very good option especially when only 1 or 2 teeth are missing, but can prove to be costlier when used for multiple missing teeth.
Implant-supported dental bridge to replace multiple teeth: It is recommended when the missing teeth are next to each other. Two implants are put at both the ends of the gap formed by the missing teeth, and artificial crowns are placed on the outer surface. It’s like two implants for more than two missing teeth.
Implant-supported denture for all/majority of the teeth missing: Formed by the combination of implants and dentures to provide a good fit and stability, prevent slipping, clicking, and issues with eating and speaking. 4-6 implants are placed on the jaws, and new dentures (removable or fixed) are fitted onto them.

One of the latest revolutionary new methods of dental implants is:

Basal implants:
These are made of titanium alloy and are one-piece and immediate loading implants i.e they are the first choice of implants when there is severe/moderate bone loss or when you want immediate resolution for your missing teeth. The process of placement is easy and quick and does not require bone augmentation or sinus lift before its placement. Patients with severe periodontal disease, smokers, or diabetics can also be easily and efficiently treated with these implants.

What Is the Dental Implants procedure?

Before placing a dental implant, the dentist thoroughly assesses and takes a detailed medical history. Several tests are done to determine the bone structure, gum tissue, and oral health condition.
Bone grafting is done when a bone is not enough to hold the implants due to severe gum disease.
Mostly done under local anesthesia, but sedation and general anesthesia can also be used.

The dental implants procedure can be divided into four stages:
Placing the Dental implant posts: Incisions are made, gums are opened, and bone is exposed. Holes are drilled into the bone, and a dental implant post is implanted deep inside the bone to act as the root of the tooth. A removable partial denture can be placed temporarily for multiple missing teeth.
Waiting for bone growth: The most important step in the bone is to fuse with the implant (Osseointegration), which takes around 4-6 months. Your dentist will regularly evaluate its condition through x-rays.
Placement of Abutment: Once Osseointegration has taken place, the gums are reopened, abutments are attached to the posts, and gums are closed, exposing the abutments. At times this step is done with implant placement. 2 weeks are required for the gum tissue to heal.
New artificial teeth placement: Impressions are taken to prepare your artificial teeth, which will look like real ones. Several sizes, colors, materials, and shapes are available, which you and your dentist can choose that suits you best.
